Having delivered the kids to school this morning, I ran a few errands and got some of my “to-do” list knocked off. Arriving home it was time for a 3-mile run followed by weary attempts to return phone calls & emails. As hard as I try…I’m always in a deficit.
As I pondered my need to get busy to accomplish my today goals…I set down to cool off, down some water and read a few headlines.
Then suddenly…my concentration was interrupted by a strange and foreign noise. It was so strange and unusual…throwing my concentration. I found myself so uncomfortable and frustrated with this “sound” I turned to my iPod for help.
But then…it hit me! I know that sound…I’ve heard it before. Not often, but I’ve heard it.
It was silence…quietness…stillness…hushed…whist…muffled…soundless. I was speechless to find a total lack of noise was surprisingly unwelcomed in my life. I was so accustomed to clamor filling my moments…that stillness was now foreign…unexpected…uncomfortable.
A quieted spirit welcomes quiet moments. In those moments, the whisper of God is received and perceived as that which it is! Holy moments require stillness…
Zephaniah 1:7 -“Be silent before the Lord God!
That means no noise…close-mouthed…hushful…muted!
And when we are…Zeph 3:17 comes rushing in with the reward:
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice (sing) over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love.”
So…turn off the noise and take a listen! Give your ears and your spirit a feel of that stuff we call silence. Be silent and welcome the gentle kindness of the whisper of God. You might find you’ve been missing something!
And if you listen closely…you might just imagine God singing…
